Parsiola (ASN: 0-1686145), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Lone Tree Hill, Dutch New Guinea, on 24 June 1944. On the previous day, elements of the 3d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, were surrounded and cut off at the top of Lone Tree Hill by a numerically superior Japanese. The 2d Battalion was ordered to make every possible effort to reach the surrounded battalion, but only two lead elements of the battalion were able to reach their beleaguered comrades before the remainder of the friendly troops were repulsed by the well-entrenched and heavy enemy presence. Efforts to get food, ammunition, and medical supplies to the trapped men of the two battalions were thwarted. On the following day, Private First Class Parsiola’s company, loaded down with badly needed food, ammunition, and medical supplies, fought its way up the hill and through the Japanese blockade to reach their trapped comrades. Unfortunately, the company had been unable to bring much ammunition and also became trapped at the top of the hill. Private First Class Parsiola took action, dashing through machine gun fire to moved back down the hill. There he organized a group of volunteers who attacked the Japanese positions with rocket launchers, hand grenades, and flamethrowers. The overwhelming and relentless assaults killed dozens of enemy soldiers, and opened a route by which supplies could at least reach the beleaguered soldiers at the top of the hill. Private First Class Parsiola’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 6th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
