The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technician Fifth Grade John LaFayete Nichols, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 1st Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, in action against enemy forces in Algeria, on 10 November 1942. On the morning of 10 November 1942, Technician Fifth Grade Nichols distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism against an armed enemy during an attack at St. Cloud, Algeria. A tank diver, Technician Fifth Grade Nichols was wounded about the head and face by a direct hit from an artillery shell on his vision slot. He refused relief and continued to drive his tank through a trap, despite considerable loss of blood. After maneuvering his tank out of the trap, Technician Fifth Grade Nichols persisted in his refusal to be relieved until the action was terminated. His tenacity and courage were an inspiration to the other members of his organization. Technician Fifth Grade Nichols’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Armored Division, and the United States Army.
