The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major General Verne Donald Mudge (ASN: 0-12679), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in the West Leyte Mountain Campaign, Luzon, Philippine Islands, in 1944. Major General Mudge coolly directed front line troops in the face of enemy fire after a five-mile hike into the mountains with only a small patrol. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major General Mudge, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
