The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal to General William Wallace Momyer (ASN: 0-22862/FR-1964), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States as Commander, Tactical Air Command, from 1 August 1968 to 30 September 1973. General Momyer’s dynamic leadership and initiative have resulted in vastly improved capabilities for Tactical Air Command and worldwide tactical air forces. During this period, Tactical Air Command trained air and ground crews, developed tactics and procedures for new weapons and to meet new enemy threats, and maintained ready forces to augment tactical forces throughout the world. In response to the North Vietnamese invasion of South Vietnam in April 1972, Tactical Air Command deployed, on very short notice, sixteen tactical squadrons consisting of over 7,000 people and 250 aircraft, thus proving once again the viability of a concept long advocated by General Momyer – that of a highly mobile and flexible Air Force. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of General Momyer culminate a long and distinguished career in the service of his country and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
