The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Alain Leroy Settle (ASN: 0-959727), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 25 September 1950 in the vicinity of Samga, Korea. On that date his battalion had been given the mission of seizing the town of Samga, a vital road junction, and effecting a link-up with the unit on the left flank. The battalion’s advance met determined resistance and was in danger of being stopped. Lieutenant Settle’s company was committed in an effort to break the enemy’s resistance. He led his rifle platoon through a hail hostile machine gun and small arms fire up a steep hill in a frontal assault. Despite severe casualties he continued to advance in the face of constant enemy fire, firing his weapon and calling encouragement to his men. His fearless actions and disregard for personal safety so inspired his platoon that they closed with the enemy, overrunning and capturing the hostile position. The seizure of this commanding terrain proved decisive in the battalion’s advance on Samga. The gallantry and inspiring leadership displayed by Lieutenant Settle reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
