Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 105 (December 16, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Willie Rowe (ASN: RA-13166400), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 September 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On that date his unit in conjunction with another company was attacking Hill 201 against the determined opposition of the well-entrenched enemy. Hostile machine gun fire had delayed the forward movement of one of the units on the flank, thereby exposing his own company’s flank to the enemy. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he moved his 57-mm. recoilless rifle from a covered position to an exposed area in order to bring fire on the enemy emplacements. From this position he and his assistant were enabled to destroy an enemy machine gun by accurate fire. The rifle’s back blast was spotted by another machine gun crew who immediately placed fire upon the weapon. Again he moved forward fearlessly disregarding the intense automatic weapons and small arms fire directed toward him, and destroyed the second machine gun. The elimination of these enemy strong points allowed his company to continue its advance. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Corporal Rowe reflects great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
