The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Brigadier General Raymond Stallings McLain (ASN: 0-157503/0-28751), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding General, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces near Montsurs, France, from 6 to 8 August 1944. On 6 August 1944, General McLain was ambushed by a considerable enemy force while he was riding along a road in a staff car in an attempt to contact the leading units of his command. He remained in the car and fired a machine gun until it jammed. He then swung the car around, returned to the nearest unit and organized an attack that made it possible for the remainder of the column to proceed. During the next two days, General McLain visited the advance troops, and by coordinating their movements enabled them to advance successfully on La Mans, capturing 1,200, killing several hundred and destroying vast quantities of material. His energy, courage and calmness under fire contributed materially to the capture of Le Mans. Brigadier General McLain’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
