The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Robert Claude McCabe, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 419th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, 10th Armored Division, in action against enemy forces on 20 and 21 April 1945 in Germany. During the period 20 – 21 April 1945, during fierce action against the enemy, Colonel McCabe fearlessly exposed himself to intense hostile ground fire and air attacks to make personal reconnaissance of routes of advance and reported enemy strong points. When enemy troops launched a desperate counterattack against his command post, this intrepid officer courageously moved into the firing line and by his heroic actions, inspired his men to repulse the enemy. Colonel McCabe’s dauntless leadership and unflinching devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel McCabe, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
