The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Raymond Bradner Marlin (ASN: 0-21899), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in le Bois de la Roche, France, on 26 July 1944. After the battalion’s communications lines were knocked out by artillery fire, Colonel Marlin left his observation point and advanced to his assault companies under heavy enemy fire. He was twice wounded on his way to the companies and was wounded a third time on his return to the command post. Despite his wounds he remained at the post directing operations until his executive officer arrived and his regimental commander ordered him to with draw.
