The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Morton David Magoffin (ASN: 0-20847), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy in the European Theater of Operations from 21 January 1944 to 9 March 1944. During this period, in his capacity as Commanding Officer, 362d Fighter Group, Lieutenant Colonel Magoffin has participated with unusual distinction in sustained combat operations against the enemy in long-range fighter-bomber escort missions against heavily defended military installations in enemy territory. In the face of unfavorable weather conditions and the hazards of attack from enemy fighter aircraft and from heavy ground defenses, Lieutenant Colonel Magoffin, by his fearless leadership, outstanding aerial proficiency, and superior tactical technique, has been in large measure responsible for the coordinated combat teamwork which has played so important a part in the successes of his command.
