The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Air Corps) Morton David Magoffin (ASN: 0-20847), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Airplane of the 362d Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in action against the enemy on 10 August 1944. While he was leading a formation of P-47 type aircraft in an attack upon an important enemy objective in the vicinity of Lemans, Colonel Magoffin’s aircraft was severely damaged by anti-aircraft fire and he himself received painful injuries. Demonstrating extraordinary fortitude and perseverance he skillfully retained his leadership of the formation and successfully led it in a brilliantly executed bombing run. By his personal leadership and valorous conduct he was instrumental in the success of the group, and his devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
