The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Colonel (Infantry) Henry Chester Hine, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in the vicinity of Crocetta and Mount Coresa, Italy, from 16 to 21 October 1944. Colonel Hine accompanied the leading elements of a battalion of his regiment in an attack. Although both flanks were exposed and subject to enemy fire, he went ahead with the assault echelon, lending encouragement to the Battalion. During the advance, approximately 20 prisoners were captured. Captain Hine’s presence was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to the men advancing through the night over difficult natural and enemy-prepared obstacles. His conduct, courage, and aggressiveness exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 34th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
