Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 263 (July 8, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George Willard Jones (ASN: 0-970559), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Battery B, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 13 April 1951, near Misan-Myon, Korea, Lieutenant Jones was attached as a forward artillery observer to elements of the Royal Northumberland Fusillers. While his unit was on patrol, it encountered heavy enemy resistance from strong mortar and machine gun emplacements. Immediately and unhesitatingly exposing himself to the enemy fire in order to reach an advantageous observation point, Lieutenant Jones skillfully brought devastating artillery fire to bear on the enemy positions, subsequently silencing the guns and dispersing the hostile forces with heavy casualties. Lieutenant Jones professional skill and heroism reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
