(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) Dwight Meyer Deter (ASN: 0-264577), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as a Medical Officer with Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), in action against enemy forces in the Philippine Islands, on 10 April 1942. Lieutenant Colonel Deter elected to remain with wounded soldiers who were taken prisoner by the Japanese so he could continue to treat and protect them. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Lieutenant Colonel Deter’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
