Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 259 (July 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Thomas A. Forehand (ASN: RA-20619528), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Tonginang-ni, Korea, Sergeant Forehand was in position on the battalion observation post emplacement when it was fiercely attacked by a numerically superior hostile force compelling the observation post personnel to withdraw from their positions on Hill 412. Though constantly under heavy enemy automatic weapons and grenade fire, Sergeant Forehand, disregarding his personal safety, repeatedly exposed himself in order to reach the crest of an adjacent hill where he was able to deliver effective covering fire for the withdrawal of the observation team. This daring action delayed the enemy attack and enabled the other men to join him, whereupon he organized them into a firing line. After the remainder of the observation post group had again withdrawn, he voluntarily remained in position inflicting numerous casualties on the enemy. Sergeant Forehand’s extreme gallantry and complete devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the esteemed traditions of the military service.
