The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James T. Coker (ASN: 0-405391), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 8 January 1943, at Tarakena, New Guinea. While in command of an Infantry Company, engaged in protecting the left flank of another company advance along a trail, Lieutenant Coker, when heavy enemy automatic fire temporarily stopped his company, went to the most forward elements of his command and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, reorganized and encouraged his men, held the position, and cleared the way for the advance to continue. Lieutenant Coker’s courage and inspiring example were of vital importance in the success of this operation. First Lieutenant Coker’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 32d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
