The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Christian Hudgins Clarke, Jr. (ASN: 0-18213), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of the 358th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action on 9 November 1944 in the vicinity of Cattanom, France. During the crossing of the Moselle River, Colonel Clarke, Regimental Commander, overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to lead his Regiment across the raging current. On the far side of the river, he coordinated the Battalions for the continuation of the attack, and at risk of his life, personally led Company * in a successful envelopment of Fort Koenigamacher. His courageous and aggressive action aided his Regiment in seizing the Fort, killing 100 enemy and capturing 75 prisoners. His gallantry was in accordance with the high military traditions.
