(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Guyton M. Christopher (ASN: 0-789369), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber in the 64th Bombardment Squadron, 43d Bombardment Group (H), FIFTH Air Force, while participating in a bombing mission on 6 January 1943, against enemy ground targets at Gasmata, New Britain, in the Southwest Pacific. While returning from the bombing mission Second Lieutenant Christopher’s bomber ran out of fuel and crash landed in the Gulf of Papua. The personal courage and zealous devotion to duty displayed by Second Lieutenant Christopher on this occasion, at the cost of his life, have upheld the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Air Force, and the United States Army Air Forces.
