The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel Donald Diego Diaz (ASN: 0-362090), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 8202d Army Unit, United States Military Advisory Group to the Republic of Korea, in action against the enemy near Hoengsong, Korea, during the period 11 through 13 February 1951. At 2100 hours on 11 February 1951, elements of two Chinese Communist divisions attacked the Republic of Korea 16th Regiment. Without regard for his personal safety, Major Diaz, a United States Advisor with the regiment, assisted in organizing the headquarters personnel, placing them in position and directing their fire with such effectiveness that heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy force. Later, when information was received that the enemy had established two road blocks on a secondary road leading to the main route of withdrawal, Major Diaz assembled stragglers and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to coordinate and direct their actions When last seen on 13 February 1951, he was personally leading them in an effort to fight their way to friendly lines. The indomitable courage displayed by Major Diaz was an inspiration to the United Nations troops and reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
