Botts (ASN: 0-339785), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 27 November 1944. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Botts (ASN: 0-339785), United States Army, for gallantry in while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Aachen, Germany, on 19 October 1944. When an enemy tank impeding the advance of assault troops destroyed the building in which his rocket-gun team was located, Captain Botts fearlessly exposed himself to extricate the men from the wreckage. In the face of continuing cannon and machine-gun fire, he skillfully maneuvered the group to another position and, with accurately aimed shells, forced the hostile vehicle to withdraw. Captain Botts’ gallant actions and outstanding leadership enabled his organization to advance and attain its objective. Captain Botts’ aggressive leadership and personal gallantry reflect great credit upon the Armed Forces of the United States.

Encountering heavy mortar bombardment while leading an assault upon the factory district of Aachen, Captain Botts skillfully maneuvered troops and vehicles from the impact area and resumed progress toward the objective. Reaching a fortified building, he seized a German soldier and, using him as a shield, searched the structure and effected capture of numerous prisoners. Captain Botts’ aggressive leadership and personal gallantry reflect great credit upon the Armed Forces of the United States.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Seth S. Botts (ASN: 0-339785), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 22 November 1944. During an attack upon a formidable enemy strongpoint, Captain Botts, observing the advance of his company halted by intense artillery and mortar fire, made numerous trips to his foremost elements and led them across the fire-swept area. Coming under mortar and direct machine gun fire, he summoned friendly armor, mounted a tank, and from an exposed position, directed devastating fire upon the hostile positions. As intensified hostile fire again threatened to stop his company’s advance, he dismounted and personally led a successful assault upon enemy machine gun nests and mortar positions, subsequently capturing commanding ground held by superior forces. Captain Botts’ outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
