The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Bruce Albert Linsday (NSN: 0-98790), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Photographic Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane and Flight Leader in Fighting Squadron NINETEEN (VF-19) attached to the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-16), while leading a division of carrier-based fighter planes on 25 October 1944. He participated in a strike against an enemy fleet which consisted of carriers, battleships, cruisers and destroyers. He led his division on a strafing attack through intense anti-aircraft fire to silence guns of a light cruiser. He then participated in a glide bombing attack on a battleship by dropping a 500 pound bomb. The battleship was left in a damaged condition. His courage and skill were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
