The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Daniel Albert Joy (NSN: 4005149), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving as a Medical Corpsman with the FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. On 5 October 1942, while our troops were engaged in a heavy fire fight with enemy troops, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Joy completely disregarded his own safety and thinking only of succoring the wounded, went into the actual front and removed the injured to a place of safety. He continued to expose himself to enemy fire in his rendition of aid until he was killed by enemy gunfire. The outstanding courage and extraordinary heroism of Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Joy deserves the recognition of which his is recommended. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
