The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] David John Gamble, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Gamble distinguished himself while serving as a Cannoneer with Battery A, 2d Battalion, 9th Artillery, 4th Infantry Division. On 7 November 1969, Private First Class Gamble’s unit at Landing Zone SAINT GEORGE came under heavy enemy sapper attack. The enemy had penetrated the perimeter at several places and was moving against the howitzer positions. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private First Class Gamble exposed himself to the enemy fire to man a machine gun. Once at the gun position, he placed a tremendous volume of machine gun fire on the enemy, halting their advance and allowing friendly casualties to be moved to cover. He continued to fire until he was fatally wounded by an enemy rocket. Private First Class Gamble’s extreme courage, aggressiveness and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
