The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James George Balluff, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, during the period from 30 May 1944 to 11 June 1944, in Italy. The battalion Lieutenant Colonel Balluff was commanding was assigned several heavily fortified objectives. He remained constantly with the advance elements of his battalion, exposing himself to enemy sniper fire in order to better direct he movements of his weapons and troops. He established his command post on the front lines and maintained an observation post in a building which was struck nine times by enemy shells. He personally led the attack on the strongly entrenched enemy positions and was one of the first to enter the objective city. After overcoming all resistance between that town and another nearby, he and his command group preceded the other elements of his battalion into the city. His exemplary conduct, outstanding leadership and calm demeanor inspired his men to redouble their efforts and accomplish their difficult mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Balluff, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
