The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private First Class] Dennis Wayne Hunter, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 April 1970. Private Hunter distinguished himself while serving as a rifleman in Company A, 2d Battalion (Airmobile), 501st Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), at Fire Support Base GRANITE, Republic of Vietnam. The fire base came under hostile mortar fire and a concentrated sapper attack. Private Hunter abandoned the safety of his foxhole and rushed toward the enemy, trapping them in suppressive crossfire between himself and the rest of his platoon. Although mortally wounded during the attack, Private Hunter contributed greatly to the defeat of the insurgents. Private Hunter’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
