The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Wilfred Young, Jr. (ASN: 0-1306037), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. During an attack on strongly defended enemy positions near a strategic airport, Lieutenant Young skillfully organized his platoon and personally led it in the assault. He continuously exposed himself to heavy enemy small-arms and automatic-weapons fire to better control his platoon in its vicious attack. The success of this operation enabled other elements of his battalion to occupy the position unhindered. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
