The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Steve P. Yambor (ASN: 6841077), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Ranger Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on or about 10 July 1943. During the initial phases of the invasion, Sergeant Yambor’s company was retarded in its advance upon a strategic hill by heavy fire from a reinforced enemy gun position. Covered only by an automatic rifle, Sergeant Yambor crawled to this enemy position and, with effective grenade fire, silenced this gun and permitted the unhindered advance of our troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
