The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Edward I. Zukowski (ASN: 6904789), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from April through August 1943. In the absence of his platoon leader and platoon sergeant, Sergeant Zukowski reorganized and led his platoon in a successful withdrawal under heavy, close-range enemy tank and machine gun fire. His cool and fearless conduct inspired the members of his platoon and contributed in a great measure to the successful completion of the withdrawal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
