The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Joseph W. Wilson (ASN: 0-1169401), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Battery, 33d Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa in November 1943. When a battery of French Field Artillery, attached to his organization without any means of transportation, were in danger of being cut off and captured by enemy tanks which had broken through out defenses, Lieutenant Wilson volunteered to go forward under heavy enemy shell fire with the necessary transportation to extricate the personnel and equipment from certain capture and destruction. Lieutenant Wilson’s coolness and bravery were an inspiration to all. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
