The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles E. Williams (ASN: 35263971), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during he period from January to May 1943. In an attempt to relieve an encircled patrol, Private First Class Williams and four other enlisted men moved their mortar to a forward position, despite heavy enemy fire, and inflicted severe damage upon the enemy until forced to withdraw. The courage and determination displayed by Private First Class Williams on this occasion inspired he men of his company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
