Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1 (January 28, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Billy L. Williams (ASN: 34162050), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily in 1943. When a radio operator was wounded during an engagement with the enemy, Corporal Williams left a position of comparative safety, crossed terrain exposed to heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, and administered first aid to the wounded man. Corporal Williams’ coolness in the face of grave personal danger inspired his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
