The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Nelson Goodson (NSN: 0-305585), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Fighter Plane in Fighting Squadron FORTY-NINE (VF-49), attached to the U.S.S. SAN JACINTO (CVL-30), in the strike of 25 July 1945, against the Japanese Naval Base of Kure. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Goodson, flying as Section Leader, took off with the strike group which was directed to make an attack against the Japanese Naval Base of Kure. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Goodson, his wingman, and five other fighter planes, due to adverse weather conditions were separated from the strike group. Without any hesitation and with absolute disregard for their safe return, they proceeded to the assigned target and made a seven plane attack against the battleship ISE. He made his attack in the face of intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire dropping his bomb which struck the Battleship amidships causing heavy damage to the superstructure and gun positions. His leadership and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
