The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Lloyd J. Sanders (ASN: 16094463), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 June 1944 in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations. Private Sanders advanced in the face of intense enemy fire to aid in the rescue of his battalion commander who had been wounded and isolated by the enemy. Because of his aggressiveness and effective fire direction, he was able to account for several of the enemy before being fatally wounded. His devotion to duty and bravery inspired everyone with him to greater effort. Private Sanders’ gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
