The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) James Todd White, Jr. (ASN: 0-26541), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Uckerath, Germany, on 22 to 23 March 1945. Given the mission of clearing demolitions from a strategically important bridge, Lieutenant White, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, courageously led a squad across perilous open terrain swept by hostile machine gun and mortar fire, and after capturing the enemy forces left to guard the bridge, proceeded to remove and neutralize a large number of enemy mines, thereby greatly facilitating the rapid advance of friendly forces. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant White, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
