The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Stanley Zak (ASN: 6148545), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, in 1943. When artillery communication lines were severed due to heavy enemy fire, Private Zak voluntarily crept forward and repaired these lines. His accomplishment of this mission resulted in the prompt re-establishment of communications and enable the artillery to resume effective fire on enemy positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Private First Class Stanley Zak (ASN: 6148545), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to May 1943. Private Zak exposed himself to heavy enemy artillery fire and laid and maintained an important communication line from his battery to a forward observation post. This line enabled a coordinated attack upon the enemy and compelled the enemy’s eventual withdrawal. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
