The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Claud L. Watkins (ASN: 6291992), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Medical Detachment of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily, during the period from March through July 1943. Although wounded in an engagement with the enemy, Private Watkins continued administering first aid to the injured until shock and loss of blood disabled him. Throughout this action, his courage and determination gave confidence to the men of his unit and exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
