The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Norman T. Woods (ASN: 0-422278), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during he period from January to May 1943. While leading a reconnaissance patrol deep within enemy territory, Lieutenant Woods captured several of the enemy and returned with valuable equipment. Later, he returned and obtained information which enable his battalion to advance speedily and maintain continuous contact with enemy forces. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Woods (ASN: 0-422278), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. While leading a motor patrol to a designated point several miles beyond our most advanced outposts, Lieutenant Woods encountered heavy enemy fie. Ordering two jeeps to remain and cover his advance with crossfire, Lieutenant Woods proceeded forward alone to the designated position. His courage and determination to complete a dangerous mission displayed the highest traditions of the Military Service.
