(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) William Edward Lobit, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy, in action against enemy forces at Momote Airstrip, Los Negros Island, Admiralty Group, on 4 March 1944 while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Squadron, 5th Cavalry Regiment 1st Cavalry Division. Lieutenant Colonel Lobit exposed himself to heavy enemy mortar, machine gun, grenade, and rifle fire in order to reorganize his defensive position at Momote, which had been under attack all night by superior Japanese forces. He personally moved to critical portions of the line, where the enemy had broken through, reorganized his force, and expelled the enemy by a vigorous counterattack. Lieutenant Colonel Lobit’s gallant leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
