The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Glenn V. Waltz (ASN: 12020704), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. When his platoon leader was severely wounded during an attack on a strong enemy position, Sergeant Waltz quickly assumed command. He constantly ignored heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire to more skillfully deploy his men in positions for which they could more effectively render fire upon the enemy. His courageous actions materially contributed to his organizations success in attaining its objective. Staff Sergeant Waltz’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
