The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Guysbert B. Vroom, Jr. (ASN: 0-388039), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to April 1943. Although his battery position had previously been evacuated because of heavy enemy artillery and tank fire, Lieutenant Vroom returned to this position and, as gunner, directed effective fire upon the enemy forces. His courage and determination inspired the officer and men of his battery. Captain Vroom’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Guysbert B. Vroom, Jr. (ASN: 0-388039), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Field Artillery Battalion of the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, during July and August 1943. After reconnoitering beyond our front lines for a favorable position for his battery, Captain Vroom courageously supervised he occupation of the selected position despite enemy shell fire. From this vantage point he was able to render maximum artillery support to our attacking infantry. Captain Vroom’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
