The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant John R. Wages (ASN: 7082121), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 3 August 1943. Although seriously wounded while leading his platoon in an assault upon the enemy, Sergeant Wages refused to seek cover and continued to exhort his men to advance until he received a mortal wound. His exemplary devotion to duty at the cost of his life was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
