The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Arthur E. White (ASN: 12006442), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily during the period from July through October 1943. Sergeant White fearlessly reconnoitered position areas for his platoon despite heavy enemy machine gun and sniper fire. While engaged in this reconnaissance, Sergeant White was seriously wounded. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

During a coordinated attack upon the enemy, Sergeant White, displaying remarkable coolness and courage in the face of heavy enemy fire, assumed command of his platoon and directed it in the successful destruction of several enemy machine gun nests. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
