The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carmen Turchiarelli (ASN: 32840), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of Hamich, Germany, in action on 18 November 1944. When an enemy tank succeeded in penetrating his company’s forward defenses and was advancing towards a battalion command post, Private Turchiarelli, despite an intense barrage, fearlessly remained at his post until the tank passed his position and with accurate rocket-gun fire destroyed the hostile armor. Later, again risking his life, he courageously remained in the path of an approaching tank and with a direct hit destroyed its gun and compelled the enemy to withdraw. Private Turchiarelli’s gallant actions and outstanding initiative, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Sergeant] Carmen Turchiarelli (ASN: 32840), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action in action in the vicinity of Hohegeiss, Germany, 14 April 1945. When a self-propelled gun approached his unit’s position, Sergeant Turchiarelli, despite an intense mortar and artillery barrage, courageously crossed the perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point. He then skillfully directed fire upon the foe, inflicted severe casualties upon the enemy force and successfully destroyed the hostile weapon. Sergeant Turchiarelli’s gallant actions and dauntless initiative, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
