The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Willis E. Truman (ASN: 6974272), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company H, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, during the period from January to May 1943. While leading vehicles loaded with rations to his company in the front lines, Sergeant Truman was attacked by an enemy patrol. Although the accuracy of enemy grenade fire damaged his own vehicle, Sergeant Truman courageously covered the successful escape of the others. His coolness and devotion to duty inspired the men of his company. Staff Sergeant Truman’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
