The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert Cobb Miller (ASN: 0-393668), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Navigator of a B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber with the FIFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, on 8 May 1942. First Lieutenant Miller’s bomber was one of the Flying Fortresses which participated in a raid on a strong concentration of Japanese warships in the Coral Sea. Before reaching the target, fire from attacking Zeros disabled one engine and the oxygen systems of his plane, but in spite of these handicaps First Lieutenant Miller kept his plane in formation and completed the bombing run. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Miller, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
