The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter C. Moss, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Italy, on 11 April 1944. While leading a volunteer patrol of seven Infantrymen deep into enemy territory through terrain known to be heavily mined, Lieutenant Moss observed approximately 30 enemy soldiers entering houses previously unoccupied. Leaving his scheduled route of return, which was known to be clear, he unhesitatingly led the attack against the superior force. He led the ensuing fire fight and the patrol was successful in capturing three prisoners and inflicting severe casualties on the enemy without loss to themselves. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
