The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Gilbert W. Tayman (ASN: 33146276), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 3 August 1943. During a savage enemy attack on h is company’s position, Private Tayman voluntarily proceeded to repair vital communication lines. Although he was killed before he could accomplish his mission, his undaunted courage and unwavering devotion to duty were an inspiration to all his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
