After graduating from high school, St. Clair Streett enlisted as a sergeant in the Signal Corps, Enlisted Reserve in 1916. He received flight training at Columbus, Ohio, and Wright Field, Ohio and was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Aviation Section of the Signal Officers’ Reserve Corps Sept. 27, 1917. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1952 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

To the highest degree General Streett displayed initiative, keen foresight, sound judgment, administrative and executive ability, and strategical acumen in the treatment of the many intricate and complicated problems incident to the initial organization and subsequent operation of the Theater Group. The efficiency of General Streett was outstanding throughout his tenure as Chief of the Theater Group which exercised general staff control over all theaters of operation, as well as defense commands, in such manner as to contribute in great measure to the efficacious implementation of War Department operational plans and the successful prosecution of the war.     The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Service) St. Clair Streett (ASN: 0-6919), U.S. Army Air Service, for extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight. As flight commander and pilot of one of the planes of the Alaskan Flying Expedition in a flight from Mitchel Field, New York to Nome, Alaska, and return from 15 July to 20 October 1920, Lieutenant Streett exhibited expert leadership, perseverance, fortitude, and courage, and much credit is due him for the successful completion of this pioneer flight to Alaska.
