The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Joe C. F. Nutter (ASN: RA-17231318), United States Army, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. Master Sergeant Nutter, a member of an artillery observation battery, distinguished himself by heroism in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Poktosi, Korea. On 7 June 1953, Sergeant Nutter exposed himself to intense hostile artillery and mortar barrage to give aid to a seriously wounded member of his unit. En route to the injured man’s position, Sergeant Nutter was under constant fire for a distance of 1,400 yards and when he had reached the wounded man, approximately fifty enemy rounds fell on all sides of him. In spite of the dangers involved, Sergeant Nutter remained with the wounded man and gave valuable assistance in evacuating him. The heroism exhibited by Sergeant Nutter on this occasion reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
