The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph Svojger, Jr. (ASN: 38036090), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 1 August 1944. Leaving a position of safety and crossing an area vulnerable to enemy aerial attack, Corporal Svojger placed casualties into a vehicle and at the risk of his life drove over heavily bombed roads to an aid station. Corporal Svojger’s prompt and gallant action was instrumental in preventing heavy loss of life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
